St Ann's Rangers progressed to the next round of the 2008 Courts Pro Bowl competition yesterday evening at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar with their second whipping of T&T Pro League counterparts, Tobago United, in just four days.
A goal apiece from Keon Edwards, Â Josimar Belgrave and Abiola Clarence proved an unattainable target for Tobago although they did peg Rangers back 1-1, at one stage, courtesy a splendid strike from Guyanese import Collie Hercules.
Rangers never looked worried, though, as they sailed into the Pro Bowl quarter-final stage. But they will almost certainly have a tougher time of things on Friday when they face Neal & Massy Caledonia AIA in the next round of the knockout competition.
Rangers have endured an indifferent start to their 2008 domestic campaign and had recorded three successive league defeats before a handsome 5-1 weekend demolition of Tobago at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet. It was Rangers' first win this year.
Tobago never looked like returning the favour yesterday.
Rangers were ahead after just six minutes as former Police player Edwards scrambled home from close quarters for his fourth goal this year-just six matches into the season.
Hercules managed a classy equaliser in the 35th minute with a left footed belter on the turn but Rangers regained their superiority before the half-time interval with a calm, measured finish by Belgrave.
Clarence doubled their lead, two minutes after the break, with a blistering left footer that squirmed off the arm of Tobago goalkeeper Richard Reynolds and ricocheted home off the bar.
Hercules and lively substitute Steven Loverson produced the odd scare but, apart from Clarence's endeavour and right back Stephen Cruickshank's enterprise, Rangers got home without bothering to extend themselves or excite their fans.
They will need to be livelier on Friday when Caledonia visit.
