Pro Bowl 1993

AFC 23 - NFC 20 (OT)
(February 7, 1993 )

The 1993 game was the first overtime in Pro Bowl history. There were 50,007 who witnessed the historic event. The coaches were George Seifert of San Francisco and Don Shula of Miami.

The only scoring of the first quarter was a 27 yard field goal by Morten Andersen of New Orleans to make the score 3-0 in favor of the NFC. In the second quarter, San Diego’s Junior Seau picked off a pass and returned it 31 yards for a 7-3 AFC lead. The NFC came back with another Andersen field goal from 37 yards and a touchdown pass from Dallas’ Troy Aikman to Cowboys teammate, Michael Irvin, to take the lead at 13-7. In the second quarter, San Diego’s Leslie O’Neal blocked a field goal attempt by Andersen and Miami’s Bryan Cox returned it to the NFC 35. This set up Kansas City’s Nick Lowery for a 42 yard field goal and the halftime score was 13-10, NFC.

In the third quarter, Buffalo’s Henry Jones intercepted an Aikman pass, setting up Lowery again, this time to tie the game at 13-13 with a 29 yard field goal. In the fourth quarter, the NFC attempted a field goal, but it was blocked by Buffalo’s Steve Tasker and Oakland’s Terry McDaniel returned the ball 28 yards for the score and a 20-13 AFC lead. The NFC tied it with :10 left in regulation when the 49ers’ Steve Young hit New York’s Rodney Hampton with a 23 yard touchdown pass. In the overtime period, Kansas City’s Derrick Thomas tackled Steve Young from behind and Young fumbled. Howie Long of the Raiders fell on the ball at the NFC 28. Lowery kicked a 33 yard field goal to end the game 4:09 into OT. The final score was 23-20.

Denver’s Steve Tasker earned the player of the game award with four tackles, forcing a fumble and blocking a field goal. This game may best be remembered for NFC coach George Seifert seeking Troy Aikman along the sideline late in the contest. Aikman, exhausted from playing in the Super Bowl the week before, had left in the third quarter to catch a flight without getting permission from Seifert. Aikman was later summoned to a meeting with Commissioner Paul Tagliabue and fined. (reminiscent of the 1942 game involving rule infractions by Sammy Baugh). The NFC attempted a record 55 passes in the 1993 Pro Bowl. Andre Rison caught 8 of them. The AFC posted a very unlikely win over the NFC. They were dominated in first downs, 30-9, and in time of possession, 40:19 to 23:50. But, the Americans did just enough in every phase of the game to squeak out the victory.
