The 1992 Pro Bowl was once again a seesaw game that was not decided until the last moments. The opposing coaches were Wayne Fontes of Detroit and Dan Reeves of Denver.
The first quarter ended in a 7-7 deadlock on a 4 yard touchdown pass from Buffalo’s Jim Kelly to Mark Clayton of the Dolphins and a 13 yard scoring toss from Washington’s Mark Rypien to Michael Irvin of the Cowboys, who was playing in his first Pro Bowl. In the second quarter, the AFC got help from both offense and defense. The Raiders’ Greg Townsend tackled Cleveland’s Earnest Byner in the end zone for a safety and Raider teammate, Jeff Jaeger, connected on a 48 yard field goal. The score was 12-7 when Washington’s Gary Clark caught a 35 yard touchdown pass from Redskins’ teammate Rypien to make the score NFC 14, AFC 12 at the half.
There was no scoring in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, the AFC tallied with another Jaeger field goal from 27 yards to take a 15-14 lead. Late in the fourth quarter, Chris Miller of Atlanta drove the NFC 85 yards. On third and ten, a personal foul on Derrick Thomas of the Chiefs moved the ball to the AFC twelve. With 4:04 remaining in the game, San Francisco’s Jerry Rice caught an 11 yard scoring pass from Miller. The final score was 21-15.
Irvin, who caught eight passes for 125 yards, including the touchdown, was named the player of the game. Miller was 7 of 10 on passes for 85 yards.
