Pro Bowl 1990

NFC 27 - AFC 21
(February 4, 1990)

The 1990 Pro Bowl was another game that highlighted great defense as the defenses accounted for two touchdowns and forced five turnovers. A crowd of 50,445 witnessed the game coached by Bud Carson of Cleveland for the AFC and John Robinson of the Rams for the NFC.

The first score of the game came on a 23 yard field goal by Detroit’s Eddie Murray . It was the only score of the first quarter. Murray made it 6-0 with a 41 yard field goal in the second quarter. Kansas City’s Christian Okoye carried the ball into the end zone from one yard out to make the score 7-6 at the half in favor of the AFC.

In the third quarter, the NFC took over. The Giants’ David Meggett caught an eleven yard touchdown strike from Randall Cunningham of the Eagles. Then, the first big stellar defensive play occurred when the Rams’ Jerry Gray pick off a pass by Houston’s Warren Moon and rumbled 51 yards for an NFC score. The NFC’s defense wasn’t through in the quarter. Minnesota’s Kieth Mallard scooped up a fumble and carried it into the endzone from 8 yards out and the NFC had scored 21 unanswered points to lead 27-7 entering the fourth quarter. It would be all they needed.

The AFC tried to come back as Seattle’s Dave Kreig hit the Dolphins’ Ferrell Edmunds with a 5 yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 27-14. Then, the AFC defense made a statement of their own when Mike Johnson intercepted a pass by Washington’s Mark Rypien and returned it 22 yards for the score. But, it was too little too late. The final score was 27-21.

It had been a game of spectacular defensive plays and it was a defender who received the ultimate honor. Jerry Gray, who had seven tackles and had the 51 yard interception for a score, was named player of the game.
